Notes
The middle is crocheted in a spiral fashion, the border is then crocheted onto the spiral base to finish the coaster.
This pattern uses US terminology.
This pattern is written in made to measure style, meaning there aren’t exact sizes or stitch numbers to follow. While stitches used to create the sample size are included, you should follow the measure-yourself style instructions and check the fit as you’re working on the piece. This allows you to create the coaster in any yarn and any size! Yep, you can even turn it into a bigger potholder or anything else that tickles your fancy!
This pattern is for intermediate level crocheters. While all stitches used are basic stitches, the spiral crochet technique may be hard for beginner crocheters.
You can use any yarn and a matching hook of your choice to create the coaster. When choosing the yarn, remember that using thinner yarns creates small rows, meaning you’ll need more rows to create a coaster that is your desired size. The opposite applies to using thicker yarn, you’ll need less rows as the stitches are taller.

- Crochet hook that matches your yarn
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Measuring tape
- Yarn A & Yarn B – Your choices of yarn for the spiral base | My choice: Woolcraft New Fashion DK in Violet and Cygnet Pato Everyday DK in Pear.
- Yarn C & Yarn D – Your choice of yarn for the border | My choice: Cygnet Pato Everyday DK in White and Stylecraft Special DK in Black
For reference, I used scrap amounts of each yarn. The coasters weigh about 7g each, meaning you only need a couple of grams of each colour!
Gauge
As this is a made to measure style pattern, matching gauge is not necessary.
Good to Know
- This is an intermediate level crochet pattern.
- This pattern is written using US crochet terminology.
- Instructions are given as approximate measurements (ex. work until the hat fits around your head) to ensure perfect sizing using any yarns. If unsure of how big of a coaster you’d want, the average size for coasters is around 9 – 10 cm or 3,5 – 4 inches.
Stitches & Abbreviations
CH – chain
ST – stitch
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
MR – magic ring
*…* x times – repeat instructions written in between asterisks specified number of times in total.
(…) – instructions written between brackets are to be worked into the same stitch.
{…} – states which colour is to be used for the next stitches.

Halloween Coaster Pattern
Using Colour A and a matching hook, MR and work Row 1 into the MR.
Row 1. {A} CH1, 4 HDC, pull the last loop long so it won’t come undone and leave it. {B} Attach yarn to MR, CH1 and 4 HDC, pull the last loop long and leave it.
Row 2. {A} *(2HDC)* repeat between * 4 times into colour B STs, pull the last loop long and leave it. Repeat on other side with colour B into colour A STs.
Row 3. {A} *HDC, (2HDC)* repeat between * 4 times into colour B STs, pull the last loop long and leave it. Repeat on other side with colour B into colour A STs.
Row 4. {A} *2 DC, (2DC)* repeat between * 4 times into colour B STs, pull the last loop long and leave it. Repeat on other side with colour B into colour A STs.
Row 5. {A} *3 DC, (2DC)* repeat between * 4 times into colour B STs, pull the last loop long and leave it. Repeat on other side with colour B into colour A STs.
Continue working rows until coaster is big enough, adding 1 DC between increases in each row. The sample has no additional rows after Row 5.
Remember how many regular STs you had between increases.
On the last row, {A} DC, HDC, SC, SL ST, fasten off. Repeat on other side with colour B.
Row 6. {C} Attach yarn to any ST of previous row. *DCs between increases in the previous row + 1 DC, (2DC)* repeat between * across. SL ST to join, fasten off.
Since the sample had 3DC in between increases in the last row before the border (in Row 5), it has 4DC in between increases in Row 6.
Border. {D} Attach yarn to any ST of previous row, *SC into the same ST, skip 1 ST, (5DC), skip 1 ST, SC and CH2* repeat between * across. SL ST to join, fasten off.
