Notes

  • The top is made by creating 3 separate granny squares that are then joined together and outlined by adding a border.
  • This pattern uses US terminology.
  • This pattern is written in made to measure style, meaning there aren’t exact sizes or stitch numbers to follow. While stitches used to create the sample size are included, you should follow the measure-yourself style instructions and check the fit as you’re working on the piece. This allows you to create the top in literally any size and achieve the perfect fit every time!
  • This pattern is for adventurous beginners or advanced beginner level crocheters. While the shaping and constructions of the top is fairly simple for beginners to follow, it does include some colour changes that might be hard for complete beginners.
  • You can use any yarn and a matching hook of your choice to create this top. When choosing the yarn, remember that using thinner yarns means the heart motif will also look smaller and you might have to add more rows to ensure proper coverage when wearing the top. The reverse applies to thicker yarn as well, the heart motif might end up too big to fit you properly.
  • While the original design includes a strappy backless design, more coverage can be achieved by crocheting more blank granny squares and half granny squares to extend the shape on both sides.

Materials

  • Crochet hook that matches your yarn.
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Yarn A – Your choice of red yarn for the heart pattern | My choice: Woolcraft New Fashion DK in Signal Red
  • Yarn B – Your choice of white yarn | My choice: Cygnet Pato DK in White

Make sure both yarns are the same weight.
I recommend sticking with a DK/weight #3 or smaller.

For reference, I used about 30g of Yarn B and 20g of Yarn A in Signal Red with a 4mm crochet hook.

Gauge

As this is a made to measure style pattern, matching gauge is not necessary.

Good to Know

  • This is an advanced beginner level crochet pattern.
  • This pattern is written using US crochet terminology.
  • Instructions are given as measurements compared to your body (ex. work until the hat fits around your head) to ensure perfect fit. If working the pattern for someone else, I recommend following measurements in Craft Yarn Council’s size chart where measuring isn’t possible.
  • To avoid doing the magic ring, you can CH2 and SL ST back into the first CH. You’ll then work into the circle you just created instead of a magic ring.
  • CH2 at the start of the row counts as DC.

Stitches & Abbreviations

  • CH – chain

Continue working rounds, adding one 3DC cluster per round until the granny square is the same size and has the same number of rounds as the heart motif granny squares. For the sample, this means 6 rounds.

Assembly & Border

Placement of crochet granny squares before they are joined. The two heart granny squares are placed diagonally with the inside corners touching. The blank granny square is placed in between them, just below so it fills in the gap and creates a triangular shape for a crop top.
Granny square placement before joining.

Place the granny squares so the two heart granny squares are at a 45 degree angle with their inner corners touching, the blank granny square goes in the gap underneath the heart motif granny squares.

You’ll then want to attach Yarn to the inside loop of the bottom corner of the right side heart motif granny square. To join the granny squares, you’ll be pushing your hook through the inside loop on the heart granny square and the inside loop of the blank granny square. You’ll then yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook. Continue working through inside loops of the granny squares until the gap between the two squares is joined. You’ll then turn to join the second heart motif granny square to the blank granny square in the exact same way.

Once all the granny squares are joined together, we’ll be working on the border of the crop top. With the right side of the top facing you, you should be moving in the direction shown with the green lines on the above graph. Work a SC into every CH space and every DC of the side of the blank granny square until you reach the corner, work 3SC into the corner CH2 space, then continue moving along by working a SC into every CH space and every DC.

Work (SC, CH3, SC) into the bottom and outside corners (left corner on the left granny square and right corner on the right granny square) of the heart motif granny squares to create loops for the long straps to tie into.

The top corner of the heart granny squares will be where the straps will be attached. To create the straps, you’ll want to SC into the CH2 corner space, then CH until the strap is long enough, then SL ST all the way back and SC in the CH2 corner space to secure the strap in place. The sample has 141 CH and 140 SL ST.

Continue SC into every CH space and every DC on each side of the squares between the corners until you reach the blank granny square again. SL ST to join to the first SC on the side of the blank granny square and fasten off.
